Man shot, killed after altercation with Cleveland County Deputies

NORMAN — A man was shot and killed Saturday morning during an altercation with Cleveland County deputies, according to Sheriff’s spokesperson Meghan McCormick.

Around 8:45 a.m. a Cleveland County Deputy stopped a GMC sport utility vehicle for a traffic violation near 24th Avenue Southwest and Boyd Street. A second deputy joined him at the stop soon after.

Two men were the only occupants inside the SUV. During the stop, the driver advised the deputy there was a gun and drugs in the vehicle, which the K-9 alerted to shortly after the admission, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

When the K-9 alerted the deputy of drugs a search of the vehicle began and the passenger in the vehicle attacked the deputy. The second officer, who had been controlling traffic, came over to help gain control of the suspect, McCormick said.

The suspect got away from both deputies and jumped into the K-9 deputy’s patrol car. One deputy tried to extract the suspect from the patrol vehicle, but the suspect managed to put the vehicle in drive and drag the deputy a short distance, the release said.

The other deputy opened fire and struck the suspect. The officer shot the suspect multiple times while he was in the deputy’s vehicle.

The injured suspect was transported to a Norman hospital, where he later died from the gunshot wounds. Guns and drugs were later found in the vehicle. Officers do not know who they belong to, McCormick said.

The driver of the SUV was arrested on drug complaints and booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center. One of the deputies was also treated for minor injuries after the incident and the K-9 suffered a cut to the head, she said.

Names of the suspects and deputies involved in the incident will be released at a later time. Both deputies have been placed on routine paid administrative leave. Detectives continue to investigate the incident.

McCormick said the 24th Avenue Southwest between Lindsey and Boyd streets were closed for several hours during investigation of the incident.
