Security uses iCloud service to track Newcastle suspects after victim attacked

NORMAN — After a Moore teen was robbed Saturday at Sooner Mall, Norman police located suspects within 30 minutes using the victim’s iCloud service.

Slaton Isaac Clay, 21, and Traci Marie Alexander, 25, both of Newcastle, were charged conjointly Monday in Cleveland County District Court for robbery, knowingly concealing stolen property and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Capt. Tom Easley said police responded to a call of a strong-armed robbery a few minutes before 7 p.m. at the mall, located at 3301 W. Main St., near the Old Navy entrance to the building.

The 17-year-old victim was approached by a male, later identified as Clay, who pushed her to the ground and then took her wallet and cell phone, which was a new iPhone, Easley said.

“Within 30 minutes, thanks to the ingenuity of some security people at the mall who she reported the incident to, they began to track the phone,” Easley said.

Mall security notified police and they tracked the phone to the 1400 block of 24th Avenue Northwest, where they spotted the suspect’s vehicle.

Easley said the victim saw the vehicle the man rode off in but said someone else was driving and she could not see the driver.

According to employees at a nearby GameStop, the suspects had taken the cell phone into the store and wanted to sell it, he said.

“Apparently, there’s a way using iCloud technology to ping the phone and send an audible alert,” Easley said. “Employees of the GameStop subsequently found the iPhone where apparently the suspects hid it when they saw all of the cops.”

Officers located the suspects in the area of the stolen merchandise and while in investigative detention, Clay was positively identified by the victim and a witness, according to an affidavit filed with charges Monday in Cleveland County District Court.
