NORMAN — The driver of a motorcycle who died following a collision on State Highway 9 Wednesday has been identified as former Norman Police Officer Thomas J. Cotrone II, 36, of Norman.
The driver of the involved Chevrolet pickup has been identified as Billy Becknell, of Norman. He was not injured.
The weck occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the 10700 block of east Highway 9. Preliminary investigation of the collision indicated that a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck pulling a trailer and Cotrone’s 2008 Yamaha motorcycle were both traveling eastbound on Highway 9.
To prepare for a turn onto northbound 108th Avenue Southeast, the pickup entered a marked left turn lane and stopped or slowed to wait for other traffic to clear. The motorcycle entered the same turn lane and made contact with the rear of the pickup’s trailer.
No other vehicles or persons were involved.
The deceased was wearing a helmet, according to police reports.
State Highway 9 was closed to through traffic between 84th Avenue Southeast and 108th Avenue Southeast for approximately four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
The preliminary investigation did not indicate any equipment failure of either vehicle and, at this time, it does not appear any criminal charges will be requested.
In addition to the Norman Police Department, Norman Fire Department, and EMSStat, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation also responded to the scene to provide assistance.
The collision remains under investigation by the Norman/OU Police Collision Investigation Reconstruction Team.
Cotrone was born Nov. 21, 1977, in Queens, N.Y., to Thomas Joseph Cotrone Sr. and Deborah Lynn Carlisle. A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel, with interment following at Norman IOOF Cemetery.
