NORMAN — It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving in Norman without one longstanding tradition — the community Thanksgiving dinner.
This year’s feast will be from from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Norman High School, 911 W. Main St., on Thanksgiving Day.
“Thanksgiving is open to anyone who wishes to come share their holiday with us and other members of our community,” Food and Shelter Executive Director April Doshier said. “We are serving a very traditional Thanksgiving menu with turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes and rolls. Of course, no Thanksgiving would be complete without pumpkin pie and pecan pie for dessert.”
Doshier adds that the dinner wouldn’t be possible without the many volunteers.
“We have had a great response on volunteers from our community and will be fully staffed to make it all happen,” Doshier said.
Doshier said that organizers are preparing to serve 800 guests both onsite and also many who cannot make it out of their homes.
“So we will take Thanksgiving to them,” Doshier said. “Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where food, family, friends and comforts should be in abundance. Though many people in Norman do not have those things in abundance, we hope to provide a sense of friendship, family and, of course, an abundance of food in a somewhat non-traditional setting. Providing a classic Thanksgiving feast with new friends and old friends, we will be warm together, full together, laugh together and share this very special day together creating memories to last a lifetime.”
Food and Shelter coordinates the dinner but partners with United Way of Norman, the City of Norman, Norman Public Schools and Salvation Army.
“It’s an incredible effort and our community can certainly help Food and Shelter by making monetary gifts to ensure we have enough turkey and mashed potatoes to fill every hungry belly that shows,” Doshier said.
