16-year-old male in hospital after 22-year-old allegedly hit teen with truck

NORMAN — A 16-year-old male is in the hospital after being hit by a truck Sunday night in a west Norman neighborhood following a strange incident, leading to a felony charge.

Brian Scott McConnell, 22, was charged Monday with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Cleveland County District Court. Police said Monday that the teen’s injuries were not severe and he was treated at a local hospital.

McConnell told police he and his female friend were dropping off another friend, passing through the neighborhood in west Norman, when the teen victim’s brother punched his driver’s side mirror and broke it, according to an affidavit filed with the charge.

McConnell then told police the victim threw a chair through the window, which was later contradicted by neighbors who witnessed the incident. McConnell also said he drove off and called police after the incident, the affidavit said.

According to neighbors who witnessed the incident at 4203 Willowpoint Drive, the truck swerved and struck the 16-year-old before he could ever throw the chair.

Witnesses also said McConnell was speeding down the street at about 35 to 40 miles per hour; the speed limit is 25 miles per hour, the document states.

When police visited the teen at the Healthplex, he told police the same story as the witnesses and said he wanted to press charges.

When police returned to the scene, they found broken glass and a large puddle of blood in front of the Willowpoint Drive home. Officers also photographed the victim and McConnell’s truck.

After the victim told police he wanted to press charges, McConnell was arrested and transported to the Cleveland County Detention Center.
