Green House is a homegrown business

NORMAN — Nancy Muenzler was a banker in her previous life. That was before the Green House, 1708 SW 24th Street, became her passion.

“We didn’t even have a green house,” she said. “We had a burned-out building and started from scratch.”

Muenzler funded a man to help him start the business.

“I was in the banking business,” she said. “I was a vice president at Security National Bank.”

But the man left, and Muenzler had no one to run the Green House. She tried hiring someone to run it for “two or three years,” but eventually she knew she would have to tackle the job personally.

“I didn’t’ t want to fail,” she said. “I went from being an investment VP to a garden and nursery person. Banking was my first love, but this is my passion.”

Muenzler and staff at The Green House will celebrate its 30-year anniversary the first weekend in May, starting on Friday night with events and continuing Saturday with hot dogs, then finishing Sunday with cheese and crackers and refreshments.

There will be special deals on plants and lots of community interaction, she said.

Muenzler has six greenhouses on site now, and they are full of plants that she grows over the winter to prepare for the heavy spring business. The Green House also carries statuary, decorative outdoor glass, ponds, fountains, art, garden tools and patio furniture.

People can drift through the green houses and other displays to find many ideas for garden design.

“We want you to be involved in gardening and enjoy it,” she said.

The colored glass pieces are works of art.

“The glass has been a real home run for us,” she said.

The colorful glass is heavy duty, and the pieces she has in her home garden have endured winter and three hail storms, she said.
