Former mayor files for county office

NORMAN — Local physician and former Norman Mayor Harold Haralson recently filed his candidacy for the Cleveland County Commission District 3 seat.

Haralson has practiced family and emergency medicine in Cleveland County for nearly 30 years. He’s a U.S. Navy veteran and served as Norman Mayor from 2004-2007.

A conservative, Haralson served as the chairman of the Cleveland County Republican party this past year.

An Eagle Scout growing up, Haralson graduated with a bachelors of science from the University of Oklahoma and attended OU Medical School.

As Mayor of Norman, through prudent spending each year, Haralson balanced the budget without raising taxes, he said in a press release announcing his candidacy.

He also helped lay the groundwork for the unprecedented economic development Norman has enjoyed in recent years, according to the release.

“Harold is a man of integrity. He was an excellent Mayor for Norman, and he will do an excellent job as County Commissioner,” State Sen. Rob Standridge said.

Haralson is a volunteer adjunct professor at the OU College of Nursing and director of Emergency Medical Services with the Noble Fire Department. He is a member of Kiwanis, the American Legion and Sons of the American Revolution.

“Through wise planning, infrastructure investment, and business friendly regulation and licensing, Harold’s leadership spurred jobs and economic development for all of Cleveland County,” Norman auto dealer Mike Fowler said.

He and his wife, Sue, live in west Norman. Haralson is the father of two adult sons, Nathaniel and Matthew. Sue’s daughter is Courtney.

“Harold has a proven record of open, honest and accountable government, and he’ll always stand up for our conservative values,” Norman businessman and former Chamber of Commerce Chair Tom Sherman, said.
