Norman transplants have ties to their home

NORMAN — Taylor Newcomb started working full time at Weichert Realty in January.

One March day he noticed a young woman talking with another employee in the office. He thought she looked familiar, might even be the sister of one of his classmates at Jackson Academy, where he graduated from high school.

He found his old classmate on Facebook, made contact, and learned that sure enough, her sister Katie also had graduated from the small private school, but a year later than he.

Katie Ringer’s journey from Jackson Academy to Weichert Realty in Norman started after graduating from the University of Mississippi in Oxford and working in her family’s furniture business for a few years.

“I decided I wanted to see more of the world,” she said.

So she found a job as an assistant to Mississippi’s Sen. Thad Cochran in Washington, D.C.

“Washington was a lot of fun,” Ringer said. “And I met my husband, Jeff, there.”

But after six years in D.C. for her and more for him, they tired of city life and politics, and felt ready to leave. They came to Oklahoma, where her husband has family, and where she began studying real estate. That was why she was visiting her husband’s aunt, Tracy Veal, that day in March.

“I remembered Taylor, and it was a nice surprise to see a familiar face,” Ringer said.

“People here at Weichert were so nice,” she said, “And they [realtors and staff] have been in business so long.”

Ringer started working part time at Weichert last June.

Taylor Newcomb’s path from Jackson Academy first led to Macon, Ga., where he attended Mercer University and studied political science and journalism. Afterward, he went back to Mississippi for about a year and worked at a tiny newspaper.
