OSU extension hosts first Ag Day, celebrates 100 years

NORMAN — The first annual Cleveland County Ag Day kicked off at 9 a.m. Saturday offering educational activities for Oklahoma families at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. The event, hosted by the OSU cooperative extension, also celebrated the co-op’s 100th anniversary.

“I grew up in a rural environment and I would like to just kind of educate those in an urban environment that it is important and it’s vital to our ways of life to be able to eat, (get) clothing, everything that agriculture plays a part in, said Jessica Tevebaugh Dunlap, extension educator for 4-H and Youth Development.

Dunlap said kids who attended the event were able to learn how to make plastic from corn, make butter and even learn how to milk a cow. There was also a wheat booth making wheat pancakes.

“I just wanted people to know where milk comes from or what horses do for us and what cattle do, too,” she said. “Here in Cleveland County we live in a really urban environment and Oklahoma is a really large agricultural-based state as far as wheat goes. We have a lot of cattle and even a lot of pork in this state too.”

Aside from people, there were horses, cattle and sheep at the event. Tractor pulls were canceled due to muddy conditions though.

“P&K did bring some equipment out to get on and look at and talk about some uses of farm equipment,” she said. “We had a stream trailer today too that was a huge hit.”

A stream hydrology trailer is “an interactive tool designed to educate youth, landowners and others about the principles of stream flow, bank erosion and proper stewardship of creeks and riparian areas,” according to the Oklahoma State University website.

Dunlap estimated at least 250 people showed up for the first annual Ag Day.
