NORMAN — Norman resident eyes burger world title
A Norman resident and art director at a local sign and design shop won the recent Bull Burger Battle in Oklahoma City. The event was the third of five burger cook-offs to qualify the best burger cooks in five local markets to compete in the ultimate competition for food supremacy. By winning the Bull Burger Battle, Sandi Sheppard also took home a premium Bull Outdoor Angus grill ($2500 ARV) and a free trip to Las Vegas to compete in the World Burger Championship at the World Food Championships in November.
Sheppard’s winning recipe, the ‘Big Bite Best-of-the-Bull Burgers,’ was a three-meat patty of ground brisket, bison and beef chorizo sitting on a spread of chipotle bacon-smoked mustard aioli. This monster-burger was topped with grilled kale and a unique relish, followed by a smoky chipotle-tequila tomato jam. Sheppard’s goal was to create a burger of valiant southwestern flavor infusions, perfecting a combination of heat, sweet, crunch and salt.
The World Burger Championship will feature 50 of the world’s best burger cooks, chefs and restaurants all competing for their share of the competition’s total prize purse of $25,000. The winner of the World Burger Championship will take home a check for $10,000 and compete against six other category champions at the World Food Championships’ Final Table for a shot at an additional $50,000.
Sheppard was prompted to enter her first cooking competition as she embarked on a project to remodel her kitchen in 2010. Her first competition was the National Cornbread Cook Off, where she was chosen as one of 10 finalists and she hasn’t looked back since.
Free Chick-fil-A for dressing like a cow
Chick-fil-A’s ninth annual Cow Appreciation Day is Friday. As part of the celebration, the restaurant is offering a free combo meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) to any customer who visits one of its 1,700-plus restaurants fully dressed as a cow. Customers dressed “head to hoof” in cow attire will receive a free Chick-fil-A Meal, which includes an entrée, side item and beverage of choice. Customers who are too “chicken” to go all-out in cow attire will receive a free entrée of choice for wearing any cow-spotted accessory, such as a hat, scarf, tie or purse.
Convenience Store Alliance, an alliance designed for independent convenience store operators across the nation to help branded sites improve margins, recently announced a new business relationship with Phillips 66, introducing a branded retailer buying program designed to help independent convenience store operators compete with large chain stores through national account pricing and service programs.
The new program, exclusive in many Phillips 66 markets, was first publicized at Phillips 66’s 2013 Marketing Conference & Trade Show on May 21-23 in Las Vegas.
The program has a proven track record — on average, participating sites have saved more than $20,000 per year.
While CSA offers more than 17 programs and services to c-store dealers and marketers, these numbers were generated from CSA’s fountain and grocery programs exclusively.
CSA President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Lawson, an Oklahoma University alum, founded CSA in 2009 after years of success in the fuel distribution industry.
Lawson noticed the stress of chain store competition on the independent convenience store dealer and saw an opportunity to help.
He designed CSA to help independent convenience store operators increase profitability in all aspects of business, not just at the gas pumps.
