Brookhaven Run expected to draw 1,300 runners

NORMAN — An estimated 1,300 runners are expected to participate in Saturday’s 28th annual Gateway Mortgage Group Brookhaven Run at Brookhaven Village at 36th Avenue Northwest and Robinson Street.

The race, home to the 5K state record of 13:51, benefits cross country programs at Norman High School and Norman North High School. Aaron Rono set the record in 2010.

Race director Gus Thompson of OK Runner said 1,000 runners are expected to compete in the open 5K division, 175 more in the one-mile run and about 150 children in the free sprints.

“About 75 percent of the runners are from Cleveland County,” Thompson said. “Almost 90 percent of the budget for the two cross country teams comes from this race.”

Winners receive cash prizes totaling $6,600, the most in Oklahoma. The race is a USATF-sanctioned course with clocks and splits at each kilometer. Two water stations will be provided.

Entertainment will be provided by Frank Barry’s band.

The title sponsor is Gateway Mortgage Group. The one-mile run/walk begins at 7:30 a.m., with a 5K wheelchair race at 7:55 a.m. The 5K race begins at 8 a.m., and sprints for children under 12 begin about 9 a.m.

Thompson said Patrick Ahearn, a Norman High graduate who runs with a prosthetic leg, will compete. Oklahoma City Land Runners will push entrant Little Miss Wheel Chair Lauren Smith, 9, of Moore, on the 5K course.

“Participatory, it’s the largest sporting event in Norman,” Thompson said, “and it sports the most elite field of any running event in Oklahoma.”

Elite runners expected to compete include race favorite Silas Kisorio, of Edmond. Kosorio, a 21-time NAIA All American at Oklahoma Christian University and 12-time national champion in cross country, will return to defend his title.

Also competing are Enoch Nadler, of Dallas, Fernando Cabada, of Boulder, Colo., Matthew and Benson Chesang, of Manhattan, Kan., Geoffrey Njonjo, of Edmond, Girma Mecheso, of Stillwater, and Scott Downard, of Norman.
