NORMAN — Out of 19 awardees, two local students were recognized for their outstanding achievement in scholarship, honors, awards, leadership and service to the university and the community during a 2013-2014 Outstanding Senior Awards reception and ceremony Nov. 15 in Oklahoma Memorial Union.

OU President David L. Boren, along with representatives and deans from the colleges, presented Outstanding Senior Awards to the students.

Hailey J. Neubauer, of Norman, was awarded the Outstanding Senior honor.

Neubauer is the daughter of Leland Neubauer and Carla Walker. She is a sociology major and a math minor and in the Joe C. and Carole Kerr McClendon Honors College. Neubauer currently has a 4.0 GPA and served as a summer intern for Harvard University in Cambridge, Maine, this year.

“I was really surprised to receive the award because I applied on a whim,” Neubauer said. “But the ceremony was awesome, and we also got recognized on the field at halftime of the Iowa State game.”

Neubauer plans on graduating in May and has been accepted in the corps of Teach for America. She will begin teaching in Dallas in fall 2014.

Kali J. Johnson, of Newcastle, also was awarded the Outstanding Senior honor.

“I found out about the award on my birthday,” Johnson said. “It was the best birthday present I could have asked for. It was such an honor to meet President Boren and be recognized.”

Johnson said she has enjoyed her time being an OU student and will miss being a part of the university.
