Norman, Noble, Little Axe juniors chosen for Boys State

Area high school juniors have been selected to attend the Oklahoma American Legion Boys State May 27 to June 3 at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M; College at Miami.

They are among 720 Oklahoma juniors selected by Legion members around the state and 20,000 young men who participate nationally. The weeklong program includes classroom study and a simulation of Oklahoma government including campaigns, debates and elections.

The first Boys State was held in 1939 in Illinois. By 1941, 34 states were conducting Boys States. Today, 49 states have programs. Oklahoma’s began in 1939 and has been held each year. An epidemic canceled one year in the 1940s.

Students selected from Norman Post 88 include Tony Cowart, Norman High, son of Ginger Morse; Gabe Snop, Norman High, son of Julian and Lynn Snop; Mark Kasulis, Norman High, son of Jack and Karen Kasulis; Xavier Bell, Norman High, son of Raymond and Phyllis Bell; Stephen Ibach, Norman High, son of Frank and Sherry Ibach; Brandon Patrick, Norman High, son of Larry and Laurie Patrick; Zachary Miller, Norman North High School, son of Mark and Darla Miller; Josh Lorenzen, Norman High, son of Ed and Micki Lorenzen; Tim Ashley, Norman High, son of Carmie and Anita Ashley; Alexander Cerda, Norman High, sponsored by Erika Cerda; Stephen McKee, home school, son of Michael and Jonee McKee; and Dustin McCoy, home school, son of Darin and Tracie McCoy.

Students selected from the Little Axe American Legion, Post 274, are Charles Ridgeway, son of Mike and Judy Ridgeway, and Greg Edmundson son of David and Doreen Edmundson. The Ridgeways live in the Little Axe area but Charles attends school at Norman High. Greg attends Little Axe High School.

The Legion posts raise the $150 costs for each boy to attend. This year’s sponsors include Norman Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Pioneer Home Real Estate, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Alexander, Robert F. Summers, Marc Heitz Chevrolet, Fowler Motors, Cole Studio, David Fries, Ferguson Pontiac Buick and Reynolds Ford.

Sponsors will be honored at a dinner at 6:30 p.m. June 8 at the Norman Lodge, 710 E. Main St.

The Noble American Legion Post 245 also is sponsoring a number of Noble High School boys to attend Boys State.

Noble youth selected are: Chris Anderson, Brandon Baker, Justin Brown, Seth Brown, Ryan Doyle, Joseph Kent, Kevin Kersey, Drake Porter, Breland Speaks and Devin Witt.

Noble sponsors also include First State Bank of Noble, Arvest Bank, Republic Bank, Super C Mart of Noble and B.J. and Bernice Longenbaugh, of Noble.
