NORMAN — The final meeting of 2012 the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents was dominated by routine facilities maintenance, administrative appointments and a small, but significant change, for the university’s student government.
OU President David Boren expressed great pride in the university’s historic number of scholarship winners this year, continued success in the $10 million scholarship campaign for the College of Medicine, and great progress in study abroad scholarships.
“As a university we want to make study abroad an opportunity not just for affluent students but for all students,” Boren said. “Scholarship endowments are greatly needed at this time.”
Scholarship endowments totaled $3.7 million to the College of Medicine from the estate of the late OU alumnus Crockett H. Page, M.D. and $1 million from the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation of Tulsa for study abroad scholarships. OU’s overall campaign for scholarships, including the two recent gifts, is now at more than $211.7 million.
The Regents honored three faculty Friday morning, appointing Suzette Grillot, interim dean of the College of International Studies, to a permanent position as dean; naming recently recognized educator Kyle Harper as senior vice provost; and announcing that the Faculty Senate office in Jacobson Hall will be named for Faculty Senate Coordinator Sonya Fallgatter.
“Sonya has served 25 different chairs in the faculty senate, she has provided great leadership and continuity and has served the longest and so well,” Boren said.
In addition, the regents approved a gross maximum price of $680,000 for expansion to the L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park, including improvements such as replacing the ticket booth and increasing fencing and security equipment. According to Athletic Director Joe Castiglione, all funding has been allocated from foundations within the Athletic Department.
