Services set Wednesday for Privett

NORMAN — Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman for former Oklahoma House Speaker and Corporation Commissioner Rex Privett. Privett, 89, died Dec. 5.

Privett served as House Speaker for six years, beginning in 1967. He was the first lawmaker in Oklahoma’s political history to preside over three consecutive legislative sessions.

He retired from the legislature in 1972 and was elected to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. He served on the commission for the next six years, serving as its chairman in 1975.

After leaving the corporation commission, Privett was appointed by Gov. George Nigh as state gasohol coordinator and later worked for First National Bank of Oklahoma City and the Oklahoma Bankers Association as its vice president of governmental affairs.

In 1982, Privett was named executive director of the Oklahoma Public Employees Retirement System and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1995.
