Fire and police to compete

NORMAN — The battle will begin at 7 p.m. today at the Norman North High School football field. Norman Police and Fire departments are holding their third annual Turkey Bowl.

The Guns and Hoses Turkey Bowl is a fundraiser put on by the police and fire departments, competing against each other in a football game, to raise money for a local charity every year.

This year’s recipient for the charity fundraiser is Compassion Pointe.

“Compassion Pointe was chosen for the work that they do in the Norman community, specifically for the commitment that they have made making a difference in the community and providing assistance to the homeless and battered citizens of Norman,” Norman police Lt. Chad Vincent said.

Vincent said the Turkey Bowl is a great opportunity for citizens to come out and support their local firefighters and police officers.

“It will also give them an opportunity to contribute to a local charity that makes a positive impact on the community on a daily basis. Also, both departments have outstanding athletes, and the game itself also proves to be highly entertaining,” he said.

In addition to the game, there will be celebrity coaches, half-time entertainment and concessions. The recommended donation at the gate is $5 for everyone older than eight.

The celebrity coach for the fire department is Jim Traber. Traber is a long-time sports radio host with the WWLS/The Sports Animal on 98.1 FM.

The celebrity coaches for the police department are Teddy Lehman and Dusty Dvoracek. Vincent said Lehman and Dvoracek are both former OU football greats and are currently sports radio hosts with KREF/The Ref on 1400 AM.

“All three were chosen for their involvement in the sports community and for the excitement that they will bring to the game. We are very appreciative of the support that they have shown to not only the Norman Police and Fire Departments, but to the Norman community,” Vincent said.
