NORMAN — Norman businessman Greg Heiple has announced his candidacy for Ward 1 Norman City Council.

“Over the past few weeks, I have been asked by friends and neighbors to step up and run for Norman City Council, Ward 1,” Heiple said in a press release Wednesday. “With the groundswell of support I have received in the last few weeks, I now feel that the time has come for me to announce. I am honored, humbled, and intensely committed to this task.”

He said he is running for Ward 1 to make Norman a more vibrant city by recruiting, retaining, and promoting economic opportunities in Ward 1 and all of Norman, and to manage and protect our natural resources.

“I will not be afraid to think outside the box to resolve issues, reach out to other Council member to get things done and not to grandstand just to hear my own voice.”

Heiple, 48, is a lifelong Norman resident, small business owner and father of two sons. He said he is passionate about his hometown and understands the importance of Norman’s authentic mix of culture, diversity, and history while maintaining a vibrant business community.

“It’s time to put the front porch back on our city government and our community,” he said. “I want to bring fresh ideas and positive solutions to the Norman City Council, while serving the needs of Ward 1 on the City Council.

He said he wants to use his financial background to help citizens understand how tax dollars are spent.

“Municipal budgets and financial statements are written in Greek for a world that understands English. They are financially legal, but educationally bankrupt. They are ineffective at communicating how our tax dollars are being spent. Let’s put an end to this, it’s time,” he said.

“In order to serve the Citizens of Ward 1,” Heiple said. “I will ensure that the Public Safety Sales Tax is being spent correctly, make sure our local parks are safe, and to build an eastside library that will also be safe for our children.”

Heiple can be reached at, by phone at 447-5535, or by email at Filing for the mayor’s post and Ward 1, 3, 5 and 7 council seats opens Monday at the Cleveland County Election Board.
