Cleveland Co. wraps up debris collections

NORMAN — Tornado debris collected in the unincorporated area of east Cleveland County is adding up. The county’s contractor picked up 37,000 cubic yards of construction debris and 65,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris.

County Commissioner Darry Stacy said the construction debris will be taken to a landfill in Oklahoma City. The vegetative debris will be ground into mulch and recycled.

Recycling the vegetative debris will save taxpayer dollars by avoiding landfill fees and will be a more environmentally friendly way of dealing with the debris, Stacy said.

Aug. 15 was the deadline day to have debris out for pickup, and anything already put out will be picked up, Stacy said.

Emergency Management Director George Mauldin helped coordinate a town hall meeting Saturday. Residents could meet with the insurance commissioner and other officials to address questions and concerns related to recovery from the May 19 tornado.

“We had a lot of people there available to answer questions,” Stacy said. “I was impressed with the response.”

Board of County Commissioners Chair Rusty Sullivan said the new south parking lot should be completed in two weeks.

Commissioners also accepted donations from Wal-Mart Stores to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office for the “Less Fortunate Families in Cleveland County” program. Wal-Mart donated $3,100 to be distributed to families in various areas of the county.

“It’s a community program that we’ve started,” Undersheriff Rhett Burnett said.

The money will help provide Christmas for low-income families.

County commissioners also declared Aug. 23 as Joe Castiglione Day for the county.

Cleveland County is hosting the Southwest District, County Officer’s and Deputies Association Conference this year.

Cleveland County Treasurer Jim Reynolds is the chairman, and David Tinsley is the vice chair for the event set for Friday at the Sam Noble Museum.

The conference is an opportunity for elected county officials and their deputies to get together and share information between various counties in the southwest region of the state. The Norman North Show Choir will provide entertainment, and Castiglione, University of Oklahoma athletic director, will be the keynote speaker.
