Norman still recovering from 2012 tornado

NORMAN — A tornado smashing through Norman on Friday the 13th in April 2012 may not have created the devastation of the 2013 tornadoes, but damages and the associated price tag added up.

Because the cost did not reach the required benchmark to receive FEMA funding, the city had to absorb repair costs.

City parks took a hard hit with trees uprooted or ripped to shreds and park facilities damaged. Now, more than a year later, recovery is still ongoing. A new shelter pavilion is nearing completion at Rotary Park; trees will be replaced at that park this fall, in part, thanks to a $5,000 gift from the Norman Rotary Club. The cost of the shelter is $103,000. Playground equipment replacement cost is $10,727.

Andrews and Eastwood parks also sustained damage. Roof repairs at Andrews totaled $3,770. Replacement of trash cans, benches and picnic tables at the three parks totaled $9,146.

Sooner Theatre had major roof damage at a cost of $23,855.

Other minor roof damage to city buildings was covered by warrantee and repaired at no cost to the city. Additional damage included:

· Police department fence $9,661

· HVAC variable frequency drive $4,000

· Doors and glass $1,750

· Security building $125

· Building A roof damage $15,000

· Building B fence $7,500; roof damage and equipment corral $1,950

· Building C boiler pump $525

· Facility maintenance roof damage $500; glass windows $2,070; securing building $3,876; HVAC unit $6,000

· Water reclamation facility light pole $2,803
