NORMAN — Big dogs, little dogs, dry dogs and wet dogs ran and splashed around Sunday at Westwood Water Park during the 8th Annual Pooch Pool Party.

The pool party, hosted by the Norman Community Dog Park, gives dogs of all sizes and breeds a chance to enjoy splashing around before the summer is over and the pool gets drained. Some even sported life vests for the occasion.

Betty Blatt, organizer of the event, said it is something that dog lovers can enjoy every year.

“It’s just fun for the dogs and families,” Blatt said. “We just keep growing and growing every year.”

About an hour before the event was over, Blatt said they had about 125 dogs visit and more were still coming in through the gates. Last year she said they had somewhere around 180 dogs and their families attend.

Something that might come as a surprise is that all those dogs coming together do not fight. Blatt said they haven’t had any dog fights except maybe the first year they held the event.

It’s believable too, as one watches the dogs running around chasing a tennis ball or paddling through the pools, just enjoying being around their families and other dogs.

The winner’s circle is always a fun thing for all involved as well, she said. Eight dogs are chosen as winners in several different categories such as biggest and smallest dog, cutest dog, dog with the most attitude and dog that is the most chicken, as well as some other fun awards.

The dogs then get roped off in a winners circle where they receive their medals and everyone claps and makes a big fanfare out of it, Blatt said, adding that the dogs just eat up the attention. The funniest ones are the small dogs who receive medals when they’re dragging them around, she said.

At the end of the day, she said they usually have to coax many of the big dogs out of the pool before cleaning up, locking up and putting an end to another fun summer.
