Three fore 2013

NORMAN — Good things come in threes for the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in 2013.

After hosting the NCAA Women’s Regional golf tournament in May and then the U.S. Amateur Golf Association’s Women’s Public Links championship in June, the course will host the Nike Golf Junior All-Star Invitational on Oct. 11-14.

The invitational event will feature 72 male and female golfers, ages 12 to 16, playing 54 holes during the competition. Those 72 golfers will be bringing parents, grandparents, siblings, coaches and more with them to our city.

Having three such high-profile golf competitions at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club within six months has brought an entirely new group of people to experience Norman for the first time.

The Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau was active in providing service and hospitality for the May and June events. From visible points like serving as timers and providing welcome bags at the course to providing on-site greeting and hospitality at the host hotel, the CVB supported the Jimmie Austin staff with association event requirements for the staff and officials when they are on site before, during and after the competition.

We are making the same kinds of plans for the American Junior Golf Association event in October.

The course is a beauty to behold but the trip to Norman is more than just the experience on the links. Successfully hosting the event requires the support of the Norman community, from the hotel staff to the dining establishments, and most importantly, an army of volunteers.

For those of you who can volunteer a shift or two during the four-day event — and possibly catch a glimpse of the sports future superstars — call the club at (405) 325-6716.

Stefanie Brickman, CTA, is currently the interim executive director of the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau. The NCVB exists to promote the city, to attract overnight meeting, convention, sport and tourism business to the community, and to enhance and contribute to the overall identity and economic wellbeing of the city. The vision of the Norman Convention & Visitors Bureau is to be the leader who proactively markets and develops Norman as the preferred destination in Oklahoma.
