The Norman Transcript
NORMAN — Saturday afternoon found a crowd of volunteers, spectators and riders at the First American Bank parking lot for The Ride Grand Prix, an adult big wheel race to benefit the United Way of Norman.
The event was initiated by First American Bank and co-sponsored by Bramlett & Associates Multimedia, Citywide Mortgage, Sportstalk 1400, Republic National Distributing Company, Alfredo’s Mexican Cafe and Nexus Productions with support from countless area businesses, including HeyDay Entertainment, 405 Bicycles, Eide Bailly, Andy Alligator’s and Investment Centers of America.
Twenty riders competed. Six riders qualified for the final heat. The top three were awarded trophies. Robert Green, representing St. John’s Episcopal Church, won first place; Drew Eddington, of 405 Bicycles, won second place; and Chris Schemmer, of Schemmer Trike Sports, won third.
In addition, attendees were invited to vote on the best costume. The People’s Choice award was given to Glen Stanley, who was dressed as a giant penguin.
“I’m overwhelmed by this event,” shared Kristin Collins, United Way of Norman president and CEO. “Watching the competition and festivities was awesome. The real winner, however, is the Norman community. ... I hope this is just the beginning of a new Norman tradition.”
