NORMAN — Laughter and squeals of excitement escaped the lips of many costumed children Sunday afternoon during First Baptist Church’s annual Family Block Party.

Complete with inflatables, a few carnival rides, games, food, music and costume contests, it is the church’s seventh year to hold the event outdoors said Clint Taylor, minister of recreation and community outreach.

“We love meeting new families and having a good time out here,” Taylor said.

The event is held every year on the Sunday before Halloween and is open to the public. This year the church was able to incorporate their new playground with the festivities as well, which is also open to the public, Taylor said.

“(The event) is just to have a safe environment to be out with your family, introduce them to the church facilities and just to be good neighbors to the community,” he said.

There’s about 500 to 1,000 people who attend the block party, varying from year to year, Taylor said. The car show has grown over the years as well.

“It started with half of a parking lot,” he said. On Sunday, a whole parking lot was dedicated to the car show.

Car owner Alan Ginn brought his 1973 Plymouth Barracuda to show for the third year at the event. Ginn said he bought the car brand new 40 years ago and has the theme song for the car ready at the touch of a button — Heart’s “Barracuda”.

Whether people were admiring cars, squealing on the rides or laughing at some of the costumes (one man received honorable mention in the costume contest for dressing as a ballerina, complete with a tutu) or just enjoying the warm October weather, the block party seemed to serve its purpose for a day of family fun.
