Santa’s Workshop keeps tradition alive

NORMAN — It’s a tradition that began 65 years ago and continues to be a part of this annual Christmas event at the J. D. McCarty Center for children with developmental disabilities in Norman.

The 40 et 8 of Oklahoma are the original founders of the McCarty Center. Each Christmas they provided gifts to the McCarty Center inpatients during the 40 et 8  Christmas party and open house. They also make sure no child left the party without a gift, and thus Santa’s Workshop was born.

Every child 12-years-old and younger is invited to visit Santa’s workshop to pick out a gift. In some cases, the gift a child receives at the party might be the only Christmas gift they receive for Christmas.

“We are seeking groups and individuals who are interested in donating gift items to Santa’s workshop to help keep this tradition alive,” said hospital spokesman Greg Gaston.

Gifts for Santa’s workshop need to be new, unwrapped items for children 12 and younger. Gifts can be brought to the McCarty Center at 2002 E. Robinson St. in Norman, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday until Dec. 19.

“Besides Santa’s workshop, these gift donations will be used to make sure that inpatients still at the McCarty Center on Christmas morning have a gift to open,” said Gaston.
