Fire destroys Norman residence

The Norman Fire Department responded to a single story residential structure fire at 2:21 a.m. Wednesday at 505 N. Sherry Ave., near the intersection of Sherry and Iowa Street. No one was home at the time of the fire, officials said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the house fully involved and flames coming from the front and rear of the structure.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey, firefighters, after searching the residence and finding it unoccupied, extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes.

Bailey said the home suffered extensive smoke and fire damage, and he estimated the total loss at $80,000 to the structure and contents. "It was probably a complete loss. The roof didn't cave in, but anything being done to rebuild the house will require they start from scratch."

Eight Norman fire units with eighteen personnel responded to the structure fire along with Norman Police and EMSStat paramedics. There were no injuries, Bailey said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Norman fire marshal's office.
