Demonstrators speak their mind

Demonstrators gathered on the University of Oklahoma's North Oval Monday evening to mark the 4,000th U.S. casualty in the Iraq war.

"That's 4,000 soldiers too many, it shouldn't even have been one," said Jeri Reed, a Norman resident whose son served in the U.S. military in Iraq. She said she came to the vigil to commemorate the deaths of all the soldiers who died in the war, including Iraqis.

"It's 4,000 U.S. soldiers, but tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed," she said.

The event was spearheaded nationally by the American Friends Service Committee after the latest soldier's death was announced Sunday.

Demonstrators held signs at the corner of University and Boyd Street from 6-7 p.m. They also displayed pictures of boots representing those of the more than 60 Oklahoma soldiers who have died in the Iraq war.

Susan Murphy of Norman also came to the vigil Monday, "'cause I'm tired of the bloodshed," she said. "Enough is enough."

She said she supported the soldiers who have served in the war, but they need to come home.

"The best way to support the troops is to bring them home to their families, let them heal," Murphy said.
