Norman Animal Welfare and police officers took into custody 28 horses and four dogs from a property in far northeast Norman Tuesday afternoon. The animals will be kept at a secure location where they will receive nourishment and veterinary evaluation and care, police said. According to Police Capt. Leonard Judy, officers responded earlier in the day to a report of numerous horses that appeared to be suffering from neglect at 144th Avenue NE and Bethel Road. Officers discovered the horses in various stages of malnutrition and neglect. Specimens were taken for analysis from two dead horses found at the scene. "The primary goal of the officers at this point is to see to the welfare of the horses and any other animals that may be on the property," Judy said. The owner of the animals was present and offered no resistance to their being taken into custody by Animal Welfare, police said. No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing, police said.? Animal Welfare Officer Carla Gathright is the lead investigator in this case.
