Sherry Moore is a proud parent. Her daughter Leah Morales will graduate this evening with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Oklahoma. But her pride isn't reserved for her daughter alone. Moore can also take some pride in herself.
At age 47 she's finally earning her bachelor's degree and will graduate from OU at the same time as her daughter.
"I think it really helped us relate to each other," Moore said of going to school at the same time as her daughter. "You know, you get to a certain point when your relationship changes."
Instead of using a weekly phone call home like many students, Morales was able to keep in touch with her mom on campus.
"It's nice seeing her on campus," Morales said of her mom. "We can go to lunch between classes."
It's also been nice having mom close by to help with Morales' own daughter, almost 1 year old, she said. It's been tough juggling school and parenthood, but Morales said Moore has helped a lot with the babysitting.
"It's definitely stressful -- it's just time management and stuff," Morales said.
She said she's proud of her mom's choice to get her degree while working.
Moore always had dreams of traveling and seeing the world, but she said she got married and had three daughters and somehow those dreams got postponed.
She started working for OU in 1999 to earn extra money for her daughters' music lessons. It was just supposed to be a short-term job, but Moore said she quickly changed her mind and decided she wanted OU to be her career.
And that was primarily a result of the people she met at OU. She said she was influenced by Ambassador Anthony Perkins, who had done so much with his life.
"It truly inspired me to see what I could do with my life," she said. So she started working on her degree in administrative leadership in 2004 while still working at OU. She works at Price College in the management division now and hopes to go on and get her master's in art administration from OU.
Coming to OU has helped her put the focus back on what she wants out of life, she said. And surprisingly, it's the same things she wanted back in high school.
"It's weird how you look back at your life and realize that you really were going in the same direction," Moore said.
