Norman North High School's chorale group can add outstanding choir and outstanding overall group to their list of awards.
In April, 63 Norman North chorale students with 20 adults traveled to New York City for the New York City Festival of Music. Choir director Tony Gonzalez said Norman choir competed against 29 choirs from 21 schools located in 13 states including Quebec and Ontario.
"It's probably the largest competition I have ever taken them to," Gonzalez said.
He said the Norman North chorale earned the outstanding choir honor because it was awarded the highest score for its performance. The festival was held in the Riverside Church.
Gonzalez said the men's and women's choirs also earned outstanding awards in their categories.
Senior Chelsea Kuwitzky, 17, said the group was able to visit New York landmarks during the trip including the Empire State Building, Yankees Stadium and Rockefeller Center.
"We loved every minute of it," she said.
Kuwitzky said she visited the site where the World Trade Center towers once stood.
"You can't comprehend that two buildings once stood there," she said.
Gonzalez said in addition to the chorale's awards, the NNHS concert choir picked up the outstanding choir honor at the Directors Choice Music Festival held in March in San Antonio. Darin Chapin directed the choir.
Both choirs will participate in the seventh annual Mostly Mozart concert set for 3 p.m. May 18 at the Nancy O'Brian Center for the Performing Arts.
Gonzalez said he has invited members from the Oklahoma City Symphony to perform with his students. Admission is $5 at the door.
