Lower jail numbers don’t necessarily mean less crime

By Peggy Laizure

• More facilities help ease crunch

By Peggy Laizure

Transcript Staff Writer

The average number of inmates housed in the Cleveland County Detention Center was 156 for the week of April 29-May 6, Capt. Ed Miller told the board of county commissioners at Monday’s meeting. Another 11 were housed at other facilities.

Although it was 10 more than the previous week, the numbers are less than a few months ago.

When asked after the meeting about the lower averages, Miller said more facilities were helping ease the crunch.

“None of this is permanent,” Miller said. “More people are getting on board. You have the drug courts, community sentencing, pre-trial release (with ankle monitors) and the McBride court.”

The McBride court is a health and special needs court.

Book-ins for the week were down 11 from the previous year, but more females were booked.

Commissioners also:

• awarded multi-vendor bids for bulk oils, lubricants and antifreeze for the board of commissioners.

• awarded a bid to Southwest Trailers for three end dump quarter frame trailers, one for District 1 and two for District 3.

• approved a contract with Adeal Services for lawn care at the Cleveland County Health Department facilities in Norman and Moore.

• approved a contract with Muskogee Youth Services for juvenile detention service in the amount of $23.27 per day.

• approved a safe and vault service agreement between the treasurer’s office and Black Mesa Security LLC and a software maintenance agreement with Business Imaging Systems Inc.

• approved the April 2008 monthly reports of Rhonda Hall, court clerk; Paula Roberts, election board; Shari Kinney, health department; Saundra DeSelms, treasurer; and Don Holyfield, county sheriff.

• approved disposal of a Gateway computer and monitor and IBM CPU from building maintenance.

• appointed Don P. Holyfield as requesting officer on all sheriff’s office accounts and Sherry L. Robertson as receiving officer on all sheriff’s accounts CFBG3.
