Monday, Norman's Unitarian Universalist Community Church will hold the second in a series of monthly discussions centered on liberal religion. "Voices of Faith and Reason: Conversation, not Confrontation" will be 7-9 p.m. and it is free and open to the public.
Monday evening's discussion, titled "Atheists and Believers: A Dialogue," will be led by Joe Meinhart. Meinhart is a former Catholic priest, current Presbyterian minister and doctoral candidate in educational leadership at the University of Oklahoma. Guest speakers include Rick Anthony, minister at Grace Fellowship in Norman, and Damion Reinhardt, member of the Oklahoma City Atheists group.
Wayne D. Riggs, associate professor of philosophy at OU and a member of Norman's Unitarian Universalist Community Church, is organizing the discussions.
"The idea leading to the organization of this discussion is to explore the conflict that arises among atheists and believers socially and personally," Riggs said. "Participants will attempt to find the common ground between the two groups as well as articulate and explore the genuine points of disagreement. We can do that only if we speak honestly and respectfully about our perceptions of one another, as well as our fears."
