Governor Jari Askins and aerospace industry leaders unveiled a new 2009-2010 Aerospace Curriculum Grant June 18 during the Education and Training Day of the Oklahoma Aerospace Summit, a program which encourages state teachers to develop innovative strategies to inspire their students. Askins announces aerospace grant for Oklahoma teachers Oklahoma Lt. Governor Jari Askins and aerospace industry leaders unveiled a new 2009-2010 Aerospace Curriculum Grant June 18 during the Education and Training Day of the Oklahoma Aerospace Summit, a program which encourages state teachers to develop innovative strategies to inspire their students.
Askins, who chairs the Aerospace States Association Workforce Development Committee and the ASA Real World Design Challenge Committee, reinforced the importance of a vibrant aerospace industry in Oklahoma. "In order to have a well-trained workforce in the aerospace industry, our teachers must encourage students to excel in science, technology, engineering and math, commonly referred to as the STEM curriculum." Askins said. "Aerospace is a $4.7 billion industry in our state and employs one in every ten Oklahomans. Oklahoma's dedicated and talented teachers will help us to remain a key player in the industry by training our future workforce." The grant program is a joint venture of the Lieutenant Governor, PITSCO Education Inc. and the Oklahoma Aerospace Summit. A review team will consider the applications and select three Oklahoma educators who will receive awards ranging from $500 to $2,000. Teachers participating in the Aerospace Fellows program are eligible for the grant and this fall can apply online at the Oklahoma Aerospace Alliance Web site www.okaero.com. -- Transcript Staff
