Novice genealogy class offered at library

For The Transcript

Pioneer Library System Genealogy Librarian Kathryn Ramsey will offer a class for novice genealogists 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Computer Training Center of the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave. Required registration can be done in-person at the library or by calling 701-2620.

Participants will learn how to search the Internet for family histories and for ancestor information. Basic computer and keyboarding skills are required, and familiarity with the Internet would be beneficial for those attending the free, two-hour class.

Ramsey is new to the Pioneer Library System but has worked as director of a private law library in Tulsa, director of the Hominy Public Library in Osage county, writer and photographer for Hominy's local weekly newspaper, and lay preacher and commissioned lay pastor for the Hominy Presbyterian Church.

In her position as genealogy librarian, Ramsey is researching other libraries' local history and genealogy services and working to develop a model for genealogy services in the nine hometown public libraries of the Pioneer Library System.

In addition to this class, those interested in genealogy research can find books in the nonfiction section of the library that give strategies and guides for research. The Virtual Library, at www.justsoyouknow.us, also offers several online databases devoted to genealogy research.

For more information about genealogy resources or any of the programs and services available at the library, call, visit, or log on to the virtual library. The Norman Public Library is part of the Pioneer Library System.
