The Norman Police Department's bomb squad was called out early today to investigate and detonate a suspicious device found in a park.
The device was found in Eastwood Park off Ponca Avenue but was taken to the parks department's maintenance building off of Constitution Avenue, just north of Reaves Park.
Police spokesman Leonard Judy said a city parks department employee found the suspicious item shortly before 8 a.m.
Judy said somebody took a prescription pill bottle, put a portion of a commercial firework inside with some BBs, attached it to the grill at Eastwood Park, and left it with a lit cigarette taped to the fuse.
The cigarette went out before igniting the fuse. A police investigation was continuing this morning.
"We strongly recommend that people avoid touching or moving any suspicious items found in public places such as parks, and that they instead call 9-1-1 and leave it to trained emergency responders to investigate it in place," Judy said.
