A 50-year anniversary celebration is planned at the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave., 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9. Everyone is invited to an old-fashioned soda shop sock hop in recognition of the creation of the library system in 1958.

Library employees are inviting the public to the "five decades in the making" celebration of the Pioneer Library System with an evening of old-fashioned fun with ice cream floats, birthday cake, games and live music.

Between now and then, they are asking everyone to share their old photos of the 1950s "Happy Days" hula hoops, sock hops, soda shops and all things Norman in the '50s.?

"We are planning to feature some of our customers' favorite '50s photos as part of our celebration," said Susan Gregory, library manager. "Please bring your photos of Norman in the 1950s to the library information desk and we will scan them, and you will be able to return and pick up the originals. If you want a copy of the scanned pictures e-mailed to you, you can leave an e-mail address. Our deadline to receive photos is Aug. 1."

Pioneer Library System dates back to October 1957 when it was originally organized as the Cleveland-Garvin-McClain Multi-County Library System. The system began service April 8, 1958, with four branches and a bookmobile that made 90 daily stops. Norman Public Library was an inaugural member of the system and was designated the headquarters library.
