Local disability advocate leads charge at national conference

By Tom Blakey
The Norman Transcript

A local disabilities advocate has joined hundreds of Americans in Washington D.C. for the Independent Living Conference and Rally, being held through Thursday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Jeff Hughes, executive director of the Progressive Independent Living Center in Norman, is representing Norman and the state throughout the week, addressing disability issues.

Other Oklahomans have joined Hughes to visit the offices of both senators to demand action on the National Council on Independent Living policies. The theme of the annual conference this presidential election year is “Time for Change ... Use Your Power!”

NCIL’s annual conference attracts approximately 750 employers, disability leaders, independent living advocates and members of Congress.

The conference features plenary sessions, an exhibit fair, a march and rally to the U.S. Capitol, and a full array of workshops. The Annual Awards Dinner will be the highlighting event, showcasing the accomplishments of the community and culminating the week’s events.

Founded in 1982, NCIL is celebrating 26 years as the longest running national cross-disability, grassroots organization run by and for people with disabilities.
