The Norman Hazardous Devices Unit disabled a suspicious device lying beneath a vehicle in the 1900 block of East Lindsey Street shortly before noon Thursday.
"After further examination of the items recovered it is not believed the device was designed as an explosive or for any other hazardous purpose," said Capt. Michael Praizner with the Norman Police Department.
Norman police and the Norman Hazardous Devices Unit responded to the scene. Praizner said the officers observed an object made of batteries, wires and electrical tape.
The unit used a tool to propel water at high speeds, breaking up the device, before retrieving the pieces. Praizner said the tool is known as a "PAN" and is used by bomb technicians to disable potential explosive devices remotely.
The Norman Hazardous Devices Unit is made up of personnel from both the Norman Police Department and the University of Oklahoma Police Department.
