NEW: Local teens giving back as Teen Heroes

The Norman Transcript

This is a busy summer for Norman high school senior Jase Mueller. Between a part-time job, family vacations and practicing sports he manages to find time to spend two days a week volunteering at Norman Regional Health System.

"I've always wanted to be a doctor ever since I was little. Volunteering at Norman Regional lets me see how a hospital really works," Mueller said. "I also enjoy being able to interact with patients, ask how they are feeling and if there is anything I can get them."

Mueller is a member of Teen Heroes, a volunteer organization for teenagers, ages 14 to 18 at Norman Regional Health System. This summer 44 teens participated, one of the largest groups to date.

"The Teen Heroes are a vital part of Norman Regional and our nine-week Summer of Service program. In the past year, they participated in 27 different service projects," said Stephanie Williford, program coordinator at Norman Regional. "In addition to all the work they do at the hospital, this summer the teens also volunteered at the HealthPlex and Health Club."

The teens participate in a variety of activities and provide many services for hospital patients, employees and the community. Some of these include delivering Kids Who Care cards, playing bingo with rehab patients, distributing magazines to waiting areas, preparing tobacco quit kits for inpatient use, making holiday tray favors for Meals on Wheels clients and helping at community events.

Teen Hero volunteers also help with major fundraising events at the hospital. This year, they raised $2,800 for the Norman Regional Health Foundation, $1,700 for United Way and $1,068 for the American Heart Association.

Norman Regional is taking applications for the Teen Heroes fall orientation. During the school year, volunteer opportunities are provided after school or on the weekends. Those interested in volunteering may visit www.normanregional.com or call 307-2562.
