Library exhibits Persian calligraphy

Examples of Persian calligraphy are on display in the Gwen Campbell Room of the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave., through Aug. 31. The display is sponsored by the Baha'i of Moore and Norman and features works from the private collection of Firouz Ardestani.

The exhibit contains nine matted examples of the artistic symbols, letters and elements characteristic of Persian calligraphy, an art form considered by many to be one of the most eye-catching and fascinating manifestations of Persian culture.?

Ardestani offers a short history of Persian scripts that accompanies the display. According to Ardestani, Persian script was invented by about 500-600 BC to provide monument inscriptions for the Achaemenid kings. Centuries later, other scripts were created. After initiation of Islam in the seventh century, Persians adapted the Arabic alphabet to the Farsi language and developed the contemporary Farsi alphabet.

The Gwen Campbell Room of the Norman library is available for public exhibits by arrangement with the library branch manager. For information, call the library at 701-2600.
