Published August 25, 2009 05:03 pm - Cleveland County Sheriff's deputies and members of the District Attorney's Street Crimes Unit busted a marijuana growing operation in rural Cleveland County Tuesday afternoon. Deputies and street crime officers responded to 19000 Skyridge Road in Newalla, after receiving an anonymous tip about the operation. NEW: Pot plants seized in Newalla; man arrested For the Transcript Cleveland County Sheriff's deputies and members of the District Attorney's Street Crimes Unit busted a marijuana growing operation in rural Cleveland County Tuesday afternoon.
Deputies and street crime officers responded to 19000 Skyridge Road in Newalla, after receiving an anonymous tip about the operation. "The anonymous caller said there was a marijuana grow at that address and that they had seen guns there too," said Sheriff Joe Lester. Deputies and Street Crimes officers responded to investigate and made contact with Derrick E. Haggard, Lester said. Deputies and officers found about 64 Marijuana plants at the residence being cultivated behind a trailer and a double barrel 12 gauge shotgun. Lester said deputies and street crime officers completed their investigation and took custody of the plants and weapons. Haggard was arrested for cultivation of Marijuana and possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony. "The District Attorney Street Crimes Unit was created by District Attorney Greg Mashburn just two weeks ago and already it is making a difference," Lester said. The Street Crimes Unit is comprised of District Attorney Investigators and cooperating law enforcement personnel from the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office and the Moore Police Department. "These are exactly the types of operations that I had hoped we would be able to work through this Unit" said District Attorney Greg Mashburn. "It is designed to supplement existing law enforcement activity in the 21st Judicial District and encourages all of us to work as a team to fight crime."
