NEW: Constitution Ave. checkpoint nets arrests

Transcript Staff

A sobriety checkpoint operated from midnight until 3 a.m. Saturday resulted in eight driving under the influence arrests.

The checkpoint was in support of the national Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest campaign which began Aug. 15.

Norman police joined forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and other State and local law enforcement and highway safety partners in conducting the crackdown campaign, which features high-visibility enforcement including sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols combined with a variety of outreach activities, including $11 million in paid national advertising.

The checkpoint was conducted in the 500 block of East Constitution Street. Five-hundred and fifteen vehicles passed through the checkpoint.

Eight drivers were arrested for Driving Under the Influence. Of those arrested, three were under the age of 21, two were held on complaints of Aggravated DUI for having a BAC at or above 0.15, and one was named in a complaint of Driving Under the Influence of Drugs. In addition, one of the drivers was also arrested on complaints of Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance and Possession of Marijuana.
