Transcript Staff
The Big Book Sale sponsored by Friends of the Norman Library is planned Oct. 24-27.
The annual fall event at the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave., offers more than 50,000 books, DVDs, video tapes, audio tapes, CDs and records for sale at bargain prices.
A preview sale for members of the Friends of the Library will be 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24. Memberships may be purchased in the library lobby, starting 9 a.m. the day of the sale. Annual memberships are $10 for individuals and $25 for families.
The sale will be open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 and 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 26. The bag sale -- all the general sale books you can stuff into a paper sack, which will be handed out at the door for $3 -- will be 3 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27.
Most books in the collectibles and better books rooms will be discounted by 50 percent Monday. There is no admission charge for the sale.
The sale will include books in more than 60 categories, including popular fiction, classics, romance, biographies, foreign languages, history, hobbies, gardening, cooking, business, science, sports and mystery/horror.
The general sale will be in the Lowry Room and children's general sale books will be in the children's storytime room. Small paperbacks will sell for 50 cents; large paperbacks, hardbacks, videos, audiotapes, CDs and records will be priced at $1. Sets and miscellaneous items are priced as marked.
In Room A/B will be an assortment of better quality books, everything from literature and popular fiction to hobbies and better children's books. In the Gallery Room, selections include first editions, signed, out-of-print, coffee table, gift books; University of Oklahoma Press, military history, Western and Native American history, and other local interest books. In addition, art books, more valuable sets, and vintage magazines will be in the Gallery Room. Collectibles and better books are individually priced, with most priced between $2 and $5. Tables will be restocked throughout the sale.
To help reduce congestion in the sale areas, shoppers will be asked to avoid using large carts or strollers, and to keep aisles clear by parking carts in open areas.
After the sale, the Friends will donate most of the left-over books (excluding collectibles) to qualified nonprofit organizations, libraries, and educational institutions. Interested organizations or volunteers should call the Friends of the Library at 360-4346.
Proceeds from the book sale, along with Friends membership dues, are used to provide the Library with funds for materials, equipment, and books that are not funded through other sources. Last year the Friends donated over $35,000 to assist with Library projects, purchases and staff development opportunities.
Book sale sponsors are the Norman Public Library, Pioneer Library System, Little Guys Movers, Legend's Restaurant, American Self Storage, Bookends, King Copy, Mercury Sign and Banner, Speeding Bullet Books and Comics and Atomik Pop.
To donate items for the sale, take them to the circulation desk at the Norman Public Library by Oct. 20. Items donated after this date will be held for future sales.
For further information, call the Norman Public Library at 701-2600.
