Commissioners honor deputy, maintenance crew

By Peggy Laizure

County Commissioner Rod Cleveland offered congratulations to a deputy sheriff who was injured trying to restrain a defendant in a courtroom and the building maintenance workers who cleaned up the courtroom afterward.

Lucas, a retired Norman police officer working as a courthouse security deputy, was cut when Troy Leal tried to slit his own throat. Officials said Leal then turned the knife on Lucas who grabbed Leal from behind. Lucas wasn't seriously hurt and applied pressure to Leal's wound until medical help arrived.

Cleveland said building maintenance workers Charlie Keeling, Mark Peterson and Gloria Montelogo worked until after midnight cleaning the blood in Judge Hetherington's courtroom.

Also Monday, commissioners approved a temporary contract with Jessica M. Hunter to provide data entry support for the H1N1 Influenza Response for the Cleveland County Health Department.

Shari Kinney, executive director of the health department, said those who are at high risk for H1N1 haven't been coming in for the shots so she hopes the general public can begin soon. She also said she had no seasonal flu vaccine at this time.

Commissioners tabled bids for roof repairs to the Alan J. Couch Center, bridge material and an hydraulic excavator. They approved the report for the county off-system bridge inspections and a claim in the amount of $23,668.50 for the inspections.

Commissioners approved the purchase and maintenance of 10 HVAC systems for the Moore county health department. They also approved a contract with Terminix to provide pest control service for the Moore and Norman health departments.

An agreement was approved between the county commissioners and Oklahoma State University for fiscal year 2009/2010 in the amount of $370,000.

Commissioners approved a payment of $9,750 to Midway Grocery Inc. dba Thompson Commissary Supply for inmate supplies.

Cleveland was given the temporary authority to supervise or resolve personnel issues, schedules, interviews, hiring and terminations within the Cleveland County IT department.

Several items were either sold or junked from the treasurer, building maintenance, sheriff and District 2 and 3's offices.
