Family gets Thanksgiving blessing

MOORE -- Brenda Roberts was sure she'd met the couple before; they seemed so familiar.

Attending a recent ribbon cutting, Roberts encountered a couple she felt she knew. "I went up to them and asked them,"Do I know you from somewhere?" she said. The couple was unsure. But Roberts persisted.

"Maybe you've heard of our daughter," they said. "She has 10 children."

Brenda Roberts had just encountered Maylene Sorrells' parents.

A short time later she would meet Maylene.

"She was just remarkable," Roberts said. "She was so kind and so honest."

Because Maylene's children participate in the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma's backpack program, Roberts invited Maylene to speak about its benefits.

And she also learned the story of the Sorrells family and their 10 children.

"I was just drawn to them," she said. "And my husband and I decided we wanted to help."

Brenda Roberts, executive director of the Moore Chamber of Commerce and her husband, Dave, a member of the Moore City Council, decided to treat the Sorrells family to Thanksgiving dinner.

Dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy -- the works.

"It was something we felt moved to do," she said. "They were so wonderful and so loving. It was a blessing."

A blessing that neither Roberts, nor the Sorrells will soon forget.

"We just couldn't shake it," Brenda said. "Dave and I went to Wal-Mart and got all the stuff and then, when I took it out there. Well, I was just blessed. I drove away saying, 'Thank you, Lord.'"
