More than five times this year Moore has overcome late-inning deficit to win. The scenario occured twice in last week’s regional tournament. That tenacity is the biggest reason the Lions open play in the Class 6A state baseball tournament today. “Coming from behind is something we have done several times this year,” MHS coach David Hinckley said. “You have athletes that believe in themselves and believe they can play. We spend a lot of time working on the idea of team and working together. I think the fact that the team would not give in, that’s a big deal.” Several of those athletes came out in full force during the regional tournament. Starting today Hinckley will see if they can do it on an even bigger stage. “It’s crazy being a senior and finally making it to state,” Moore’s Blake Heintzelman said. “You look forward to it ever since you were little, getting a chance to take your team to state and having a good time up there.” The tournament was scheduled to start Wednesday, but was postponed due to rain. Depending on the weather, Moore (24-15) will face Broken Arrow (25-10) at 4 p.m. today at Bixby. If the Lions win, they will face the winner of the Edmond Santa Fe (33-6) and Jenks (30-10) at 4 p.m. Friday. A loss sends them to a losers’ bracket game at 6:30 tonight. In the double-elimination pool, the winners of each bracket will face-off in a one game winner-take-all state championship game Monday. This is the Lions’ first trip to the state tournament since 2001. Hinckley sees a resemblance between the two teams. “In 2001 (we) had good defense, could hit the ball and had good pitching,” Hinckley said. “We are in the same boat. So we have just as good of a shot as any team.” While the squads are similar, Hinckley hopes they have different outcomes. In 2001, the Lions were eliminated in three games.
