Harry and Nina Hopkins celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 10 while cruising in the Mediterranean Sea with their family.
Family members traveling with the couple were son Neil Hopkins and his wife Ann, son Carl Hopkins and his wife Karee, daughter Anita Neal and her husband Jay, and son Paul Hopkins, his wife Kellie and their three sons Cooper, Carson and Foster.
The trip began in Rome for a few days of sightseeing. The group then boarded a ship in Civitavecchia, Italy, for a 12-day cruise of the Western Mediterranean. Ports of call included Naples, Venice, Livorno and Florence, Italy; Messina, Sicily; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Barcelona, Spain; and Cannes, France, which included a trip to the Principality of Monaco and Monte Carlo.
The 13 family members were seated each night at the captain's table for dinner and discussion of the day's highlights. June 10, the family celebrated the 16th birthday of Cooper Hopkins with birthday cake and a serenade by the wait staff followed by the 60th wedding anniversary celebration.
June 8 the family also celebrated the 35th wedding anniversary of Anita and Jay Neal.
The cruise director was so impressed with the Hopkins' 60th anniversary, the Hopkins said, that they were chosen to participate in the "Wedding Game" (the ship's version of the "Newlywed Game") which they won by a vote from the crowd.
Before they were married, Harry Hopkins lived in Dibble and Nina lived in Blanchard. One day Nina Hopkins was sitting on the school steps with the music teacher's daughter Janie Gilmore.
Gilmore said "My mother has arranged for a boy to sit by me at the movies Saturday night."
Another friend, Nadine White, and Nina Hopkins bought a large bag of popcorn and sat a couple of rows behind Harry Hopkins and Gilmore. The girls threw popcorn at the couple all night.
The next Saturday night, Nina was sitting next to Harry.
The couple dated on and off throughout high school. They were married right after high school June 10, 1948, when the couple was 17 years old.
Harry Hopkins was the associate administrator at Norman Municipal Hospital (now Norman Regional) for 25 years and also worked at City National Bank (now First Fidelity Bank).
Nina Hopkins worked at JCPenney for 18 years and owned and operated Nina's Hallmark at Normandy Creek Shopping Mall.
Making happy memories for the family has been the long time goal for Harry and Nina Hopkins.
