NORMAN — Melvin Ernest and Rebecca Huffine, always known as Becky, were married on Sept. 1, 1962, in Tuttle at First Baptist Church.
They met in 1960 on a blind date while they were students at the University of Oklahoma. Melvin was a sophomore from Norman, and Becky was a freshman from Tuttle.
Both graduated from OU in 1964, Melvin with a degree in political science and Becky with a degree in elementary education. Melvin later graduated from the Oklahoma City University Law School, and Becky earned a master’s degree in reading education at OU. They have continued to live in Norman, where Melvin practiced law and Becky taught, first in Norman and later in Little Axe, in the classroom and as a reading specialist.
Becky retired in 2001 after 30 years, while Melvin practiced law in Norman and was president of HEBCO Inc., a technical services company working with the Air Force, until retiring in 1991. He then became a history teacher at Norman Central Mid High and Norman High School, retiring again in 2004.
Melvin has been a member of the Oklahoma and Cleveland County Bar Associations, Norman Lions Club, and, with Becky, members of the hospitality committee for international students. Becky was a founder of International Friends and also served with the Christian Women’s Club. Both have been charter members of Bethel Baptist Church since its founding in 1963, where Melvin has been a deacon, and they have continuously sung in the choir and taught Bible classes while serving in and on numerous ministries and committees.
They have always been avid independent readers, participated in and followed local sporting activities and teams and enjoyed traveling and camping with their RV.
They have two children: a daughter, Lorraine, living in Clifton, N.J., and a son, Phillip, who lives in Ft. Worth, Texas, with his wife Lisa and three children.
They are now in the planning stages of a cruise to celebrate this milestone.
