NORMAN — Delfar and Marion McKenzie Grant were married on June 12, 1943, at the West Somerville Congregational Church in West Somerville, Mass. They attended Sunday school classes there when they first met, which was during their high school years.
The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary June 29 with family and friends at a dinner and reception at the Goodrich Memorial United Methodist Church, where they are members. The prayer was given by the Pastor Jim Shepherd, and David Wilson Burns sang “The Prayer of St. Francis.”
Marion and Del are the parents of Elizabeth (Clifford) Ross and the late William (Sherry) Grant, all of Noble, and Robert (Debbie) Grant of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. They have four grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, eight stepgreat-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Each family attending the anniversary was given a booklet of memories containing favorite sayings, poems, stories, songs and photos. A table had numerous albums and photographs of family over the 70 years. Church friends Tim and Melissa Duncan provided music from the ’40s era. Marion and Del were surprised by the gift of a solo performance of “Plant a Seed the Earth” by their 5-year-old great-granddaughter, Breton.
Del was in the Navy during World War II, serving aboard the destroyer USS Zellars (DD777). He was employed by IBM and retired in 1986. Marion was a homemaker and correspondant-extroardinaire.
During their 70 years of marriage, they have resided in Massachusetts, New York, Florida and Oklahoma, moving to Norman in 2001 to be closer to family. They have volunteered in various places wherever they have lived.
Marion and Del have been blessed with good health, wonderful friends and a family who love them dearly. They have received many well wishes from near and afar for their continued good health and happiness.
