NORMAN — Max and Brenda (Thacker) Newberry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday.
They met at a dance in Cincinnati in 1963, where Max was working as an engineer for General Electric and Brenda worked as a telephone switchboard operator. They were married six months later on Aug. 3.
After living in Schenectady, N.Y., Louisville, Ky., and Chicago, they settled in Norman in 1974. Max administered the industry program for the Department of Corrections for 24 years, and the industry administrative building was named in his honor in 2007. Brenda was employed as a dental assistant for Dr. Robert Wells for 20 years.
During this time, they were involved in a farm and ranch operation in Harmon County for 37 years. They retired in 2000 and have been traveling throughout the United States in their motor home.
They have three children: Gary, an attorney, and Tiffany and Stacy, both nurses. They have five grandchildren who all live in Oklahoma, so they get to visit them frequently.
