Woods celebrate 50 years

NORMAN — Ron Wood met Gail Woodard at the Vernon, Texas, city pool in the summer of 1960 when they were both 15 years old.

Ron was a lifeguard, and when Gail walked in wearing a yellow sundress, he was immediately smitten. They began dating, and Ron transferred from Vernon High School to Northside School so he could finish his junior and senior years with Gail.

Ron graduated a semester before Gail and attended Howard County Junior College in Big Spring, Texas. They wrote letters to one another every day, which they have both saved. They married on Aug. 3, 1963, at the Fargo Baptist Church in Fargo, Texas, when they were 18 years old, just a few months after Gail graduated from high school.

Ron and Gail lived in Vernon, Texas, until the fall of 1964 when they moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, so Ron could attend Midwestern University while Gail worked in an insurance office.

Their two daughters, Diane and Susan, were born in Wichita Falls, where Ron began his career in city government as the director of finance for the city.

Ron pursued a career in municipal governance, working for the cities of Ft. Collins, Colo., Austin, Texas, Blaine, Minn., and Liberty, Texas, including serving as the director of finance and then city manager for Norman from 1989-2001.

Gail volunteered in her daughters’ schools and in the community as a Campfire leader, in a retirement home and in her neighborhood associations and also has been involved with Newcomers groups, Meals on Wheels and Friends of the Library.

When Ron retired, they returned to Norman to be near their daughter, Diane, who is a teacher for Norman Public Schools. Their daughter, Susan, recently moved to Long Island, where she works as an academic librarian.

Ron, a life-long golfer, continues to play frequently and enjoys doting on his dog, Boomer, and reading. Gail works as a substitute teacher for Norman Public Schools and enjoys playing bridge.
